11-03-2015 Bong & His Trip to Penang Part 3 (Kek Lok Si before sunset)

After walking
and looking around
without any rest for about 2 hours,
we took a small break~
Arne had a can of beer
and of course I also ordered
'char hor fun'
for him to try~
After the small break,
we regained our energy
and walked to our hotel for checking in...
We rested for almost 2 hours at the hotel.
Around five in the evening,
we continued our sight seeing in Penang...
not on foot
but taking a bus this time~
since the destination we wanted to go
was not walk-able distance from our hotel~
The bus ride took only less than 30 minutes,
but we waited like 40 minutes just for the right bus~
Tips for taking bus going to this famous destination
"Kek Lok Si"
is ...
just hop in any bus numbered 201, 202, 203 or 204...
or
whenever a bus stops,
ask the bus driver if the bus is going to Kek Lok Si~
We dropped off the bus at the main road
and started walking towards the temple~
We passed by an old walking alley
where sellers had their shops opened there~
But around 6 in the evening,
most of the shops were already closed,
or closing soon~
Well,
I have not been to this temple for almost 8 years
and this part of the temple has not changed at all~
There were still a lot of
turtles~!
And
many people bought food to feed them~
To be continued...

08-03-2015 Bong & His Trip to Penang Part 2 (The artistic side of Penang: Murals & Shops)

After leaving Clan Jetty,
we started to look after those famous
street murals in Penang island~
and the first one that we passed by was this one~
"I want pau"
(P/S: Pau - chinese bread kind of food)
Right beside "I want pau",
we visited the not so very famous
"Old kopitiam"
(P/S: Kopitiam - coffee shop in hokkien dialect)
Of course,
we could miss one of the most famous one~
"Little children on bicycle" mural~
Look at the queue,
and the amount of people talking picture there~
I felt really sorry for the cars or motorcycles that
had to pass by there~
Best time to take picture with this one
is actually in the noon~
then there wouldn't be any shadow while you are taking picture with it
Besides nice street murals,
we also visited some nice shops around the area~
The old shops located in tiny narrow streets,
make the whole area surrounded with
feels of heritage~
The most significant shop,
I must say is this one~
It is called
"Living story 14号生活馆"
They provided red papers to whoever that visited the shop
to write chinese new year wishing words~
For foreign visitors that couldn't write chinese words,
they were still welcomed to leave any word there~
To be continued..

04-03-2015 Bong & His Trip to Penang Part 1 (Lim Jetty & Chew Jetty)

To go to Penang island,
we took the ferry,
which is very convenient for tourists on foot like us~
Though it is not the super clean type of sea,
the view during the ferry trip
was still very fascinating~
Well,
the ferry ride took about 10 minutes
and after we landed on Penang island...
right away we started walking around clan jetty ~
The first one that we went to was Lim Jetty~
It is not the most famous one~
But still it was nice to see the jetty was decorated nicely
with chinese new year decorations
such as lantern~
Here came the most famous one~
CHEW Jetty~
Well,
at this point you might wonder...
what so special with these jetties?
They are actually the traditional settlement created by chinese immigrants
back in the late 19th century~
These immigrants shared common historical, geographical and lineage origin.
Thus, they were named after the surnames,
such as 'LIM' and 'CHEW'.

These wooden houses and plankways
are seen as precious heritage of George Town~
and now Chew Jetty has been turned into a famous tourist location!
The whole jetty is not so very big...
but there are many nice shops selling
nice food and unique souvenirs along the jetty~
After visiting Chew Jetty,
we continued our trip
with the search for some famous walls in Penang island~

Well,
now you might wonder....
why were we searching for walls?
Are there anything special with those walls?

Stay tuned to know the answer~

XOXO
